Western Grebes Rushing
Western Grebes Rushing
The male and female will often bob their heads up and down and mimic one another preening and then suddenly stand up and run on the water. They are actually running and do not flap their wings at all when doing this. Western and Clark's grebes engage in a maneuver called rushing during the spring mating seasonin which they sprint up to 66 feet across the water in coordinated groups of two or more in about seven seconds. They're the largest vertebrates with the ability to walk on water.
