Polar Bear and Two Cubs
The following images were made in a remote part of northern Manitoba. I was based in a lodge near the Wapusk National Park, with about 24 other photographers. No running water, compost toilets, two bunk beds in a room with 3 other guys. This area may be the only one where it is possible to photograph Polar Bears that have recently left their dens and are headed to Hudson Bay where mom can find a seal to eat. She hasn't eaten in about five months when she leaves the den. A difficult trip, but rewarding if you are lucky enough to find a bear with cubs. We were able to photograph this one for five hours. It was snowing, the wind blowing right in our faces and the temperature was about minus 30 Celsius with the wind chill.
